Buffet Breakfast at Azure Restaurant, Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa

The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa has been one of my favourite Cape Town venues for quite a few years. I have been looking for a fabulous excuse on a special occassion to go there once again, but this time for their amazing buffet breakfast.

Breakfast is served at the Azure Restaurant til 10:30am every morning and at R155 per person the selection of delights is truly worth it. The service is always excellent and the quality of the fabulous array of dishes make use of fresh ingredients, with warm breakfast dishes made to order.

We started our buffet feast with a glass of sparkling wine and oysters. Not something I would have ever considered for breakfast, but one which was just a decadent beginning to a scrumptious meal.

With an order of tea in the brewing, we selected a variety of fresh fruits from the fruit buffet and followed it a few minutes later with my favourite part of a breakfast buffet – the cold meats and cheeses with fresh, “home-baked” breads. I waited a while and had to go back for seconds of the smoked salmon-trout and delicious seed loaf with cream cheese!

The Twelve Apostles Hotel warm breakfast menu consists of:

  • 12A Breakfast – traditional selection of eggs of choice, bacon, pork sausage, been sausage, saute mushrooms, grilled tomatoes and sauteed potatoes
  • Azure Waffle – fresh home-made waffle topped with glazed apple and banana, served with warm maple syrup, vanilla creme fraiche and fresh mint
  • Eggs Benedict – poached eggs on toasted English muffin with crispy smoked bacon and topped with hollandaise sauce
  • Breakfast Omelette – filled with your choice from variety of fantastic ingredients
  • Hot Porridge of the Day – served with butter, golden syrup and fresh cream

My Mom and I decided to share the eggs benedict seeing as it came with 2 eggs on 1/2 an English muffin each. It was just perfect as it was quite rich and delicious.

We left almost 2 hours after our arrival feeling delightfully full and happy to take a nice long, scenic drive back to the city bowl.

La Vie, Sea Point

La Vie

La Vie Cafe

Breakfast along the Atlantic Seaboard: La Vie, Sea Point

What a gorgeous Cape Town day it was. Sun shining, no wind! Perfect for breakfast and then a walk along the promenade in Sea Point.

Perfect spot: La Vie, Sea Point

We sat outside and basked in the morning sun and admiring the view, while sipping on café latte in anticipation of a fab breakfast.

Initially, there was some confusion as to who ‘owned’ our table, but once our orders were in, we were secure in the knowledge that our hunger would be abated.

Standard health breakfast is up for grabs at R36 (muesli, yoghurt, fruit) as well as a Traditional Fry Up at R47. Add refried beans to your traditional fry up and you have the Mexican Breakfast @ R55.

Eggs benedict

I was intrigued by the La Vie Breakfast of half a small ciabatta loaf layered with lettuce, bacon, 2 sunny side up eggs and all topped with a delicious onion and tomato mix @ R34. I was torn between that and the Mushroom Breakfast: a large brown mushroom topped with an egg, grilled tomato and caramalized onion and then sprinkled with parmesan @ R36 (add bacon or smoked salmon for an extra R10). But decided on the ciabatta and it was delicious!

My friend took the eggs benedict @ R55 and they looked amazing! 2 lovely fresh english muffins topped with a creamy spinach mixture, bacon (or salmon), soft-boiled egg, and covered in just the right amount of hollandaise sauce. Needless to say she gobbled it all up! It seemed a popular choice with all the other breakfast go-ers.

Omelettes with various mixtures of fillings from R28 through to R45 as well as croissants / bagels also with a choice of inners from R21 to R52.

I really enjoyed the chilled vibe at La Vie, the coming and going of people and the great view out across the road, past the pavilion to the sea beyond. Inspired a 1 hour walk before heading off.

Camps Bay Retreat, Cape Town

The Manor House

View towards Glen Beach

Breakfast along the Atlantic Seaboard: Camps Bay Retreat

I love Camps Bay for breakfast, but wanted something a little quieter and more intimate. A little research and Camps Bay Retreat was discovered.

Situated just above Glen Beach and accessed from Chilworth Road in Camps Bay, this large estate (4 acres) and manor house (built in 1929) is now owned by Village & Life and has been turned into a 5 star boutique hotel.

We arrived and were seated inside initially. It was such a glorious day that I did not feel like 4 walls around me. We ordered teas and coffees and a few minutes later were notified of an outside table availability. The outside had been full due to the “residents” taking advantage of breakfast outside on this gorgeous day. Needless to say that I was much happier with now seeing the ocean and hearing the waves crashing along Glen Beach below.

Breakfast is broken down into a cold buffet and a warm breakfast menu.

Cold buffet:
The cold buffet comprised of fresh croissants, sweet pastries, fresh sliced fruits, various cereals, thick yoghurt, cold meats and cheeses and different breads. 3 different fresh fruit juices were also available. From the cold buffet section, one can look into the kitchen where the warm breakfasts are being cooked up. Veggies juices were available from the actual menu.

Warm breakfast:
After tucking into a bit of a continental beginning, I felt like being a bit naughty and opted for the “French Toast Tower”- consisting of perfectly cooked eggy bread, bacon and wonderful melted brie, nicely layered and covered in maple syrup.

My partner opted for the “Benedict Blondie” – a single muffin with a poached egg, crispy bacon and hollandaise sauce. It was so good he opted for a second one! I must say that the sauce was the best hollandaise sauce I have tasted thus far!

Other options included a 3 egg frittata with choice of toppings, retreat pancakes coated in crème fresh and berry compot, and butter croissants with various fillings including smoked salmon and asparagus (interesting).

The venue quoted R85 for the cold buffet breakfast and R125 for the cold buffet and warm breakfast menu combination. But at the end of the day, we were only charged for the small selection that we did eat and drink and it was incredibly reasonable. With the friendly service, tasty food, great view and the option of a lovely stroll in the grounds afterwards, I will definitely be going back for more!
