Lazari Original: Breakfast in Cape Town City Centre

I arrived at Lazari 30 minutes before my friend, just to get a sense of the place and to make sure we got a table for breakfast. To my relief, it was quiet with an eclectic mix of people spotted here and there. There are only 10 tables and a couch section inside Lazaris, with 2 or 3 outside Parisian-style tables (when the weather is good). By the time we left, close to 12pm, clientele needed to wait for a table.

Although excited about the prospect of eggs benedict (R50), I thought I better consider some of the other options as well … just in case there was something unusual up for grabs. Health breakfast with muesli, yoghurt, fruit and honey (R45) looked good, also as an option were gorgeous, huge looking croissants with various filling options including scrambled eggs, salmon, bacon and one interesting combo of mozzarella, ham, rocket and tomato.

But, from the eggs benedict I did not stray! Especially when I was offered the option of bacon, ham or salmon. Being a salmon addict, I obviously opted for that! My friend chose the early bird breakfast with a generous portion of scrambled egg, loads of bacon, fried tomato and fresh ciabatta (R47).

My eggs benedict was quite a rustic looking plate of food with way too much sauce. But the eggs were perfect and the ciabatta bread that it was all placed on was delicious and fresh. Accompanied by a fantastic cappuccino (I went in for a second cup of that!), I was in heaven.

The service was great, very caring and attentive. I found it a very calming and relaxing environment, even with the odd clamour from the kitchen and the hiss of the coffee machine. Parents happily arrived with their young children who contentedly ate of the pink cupcakes which Lazari are also famous for.

Update: 16 December 2010
Popped into Lazari this morning for a quick cappuccino with a friend and ended up having breakfast of delish scrambled eggs and rye bread. They have recently expanded their premises as the shop next door became available. Noise levels are quite high due to high ceilings, but is still fantastically vibey.
